Geoeconomics; economic statecraft; EU trade and investment policy

Biography

Tobias Gehrke has been a Research Fellow in the Europe in the World Programme at the Egmont Institute since 2017. His research centres on geoeconomics – the economic and technological aspects of national security and their implementation in trade, investment and industrial strategy – with a particular focus on economic statecraft between the EU, the US, and China.
He is pursuing a PhD at Ghent University as part of the (concluded) EU Horizon 2020 Marie Curie research project “EU Trade & Investment Policy” (EUTIP). Tobias was a Visiting Fellow at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nottingham University and at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington D.C. Other work experiences include the EU Commission’s DG Trade, the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, and the private legal sector. Tobias has contributed to several international research and advisory projects for EU institutions and member states.
